Internet Court: The Next Step Toward AI-to-AI Commerce

Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly. AI agents are no longer limited to answering questions or generating content. Increasingly, they can make decisions, negotiate, process payments and complete tasks autonomously.

However, there is still a major challenge: the different technologies that make these interactions possible are not yet fully connected.

To address this fragmentation, a consortium of 27 companies has introduced Internet Court, an open standard designed to facilitate agreements and transactions between AI agents. The initiative is led by the GenLayer Foundation and includes companies working in blockchain and Web3 infrastructure.

What is Internet Court?

Internet Court is designed to provide a kind of technological and legal infrastructure for an economy where machines can interact with one another.

Today, different protocols handle different parts of the process. Some focus on identity, others on negotiation, payments or interoperability.

The challenge is that these technologies have largely been developed separately.

Internet Court aims to connect these different pieces so that an AI agent could potentially:

identify another agent ? negotiate an agreement ? make a payment ? execute a contract ? resolve a dispute.

The initiative brings together technologies associated with protocols such as ERC-7857, A2A and x402, along with smart-account infrastructure and tools for executing transactions. 

What happens when something goes wrong?

This is one of the most interesting aspects of the project.

In traditional commerce, when two companies have a dispute, they can rely on contracts, lawyers, courts and arbitration mechanisms.

But what happens when two AI agents enter into an agreement with each other?

Internet Court introduces a dispute-resolution layer based on decentralized AI validators. These systems can evaluate agreements that combine code, natural language and real-world information.

This could become an important component of an emerging digital economy in which AI agents don't simply work for people, but can also interact and conduct business with other AI agents.

Why does it matter?

The development of autonomous agents is accelerating, but intelligence alone isn't enough for them to participate in real commercial activities.

They also need identity, communication, payments, security and ways to resolve disputes.

Internet Court aims to bring these capabilities together through a common, open infrastructure.

Although this technology is still in its early stages, initiatives like this offer a glimpse into where the internet could be heading: an ecosystem where humans continue making important decisions, while AI agents handle an increasing share of digital operations.

Fun Fact

One example mentioned by the project is Osobot, an autonomous agent that has reportedly been able to perform activities such as sending code, running a newsroom and judging hackathons.
